About the ESSC

The Extremely Short Story Competition (ESSC) was originated by Professor Peter Hassall of Zayed University, the United Arab Emirates. The ESSC Japan has been administered by the Japanese Association for Asian Englishes (JAFAE). Professor Nobuyuki Honna of Aoyama Gakuin University, President of the JAFAE, imported the idea to Japan. As its name suggests, it is a competition for writing an extremely short story in exactly 50 words.
